Kennebunks

“The Kennebunks” – Kennebunk, the Lower Village of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport -- are truly wonderful places to live.

Kennebunkport, and the Lower Village are picturesque, coastal communities located between the Kennebunk River and the Atlantic Ocean. The Port, as the locals call it, is situated on the east side of the river and the Lower Village is on the west. They are only 90 miles north of Boston and are close to Maine’s cultural, social, and economic capital, Portland. Kennebunkport is known nationally as the summer home of former President George H. W. Bush.

Originally an agricultural and shipbuilding settlement, Kennebunk was incorporated in 1820 from a portion of the town of Wells.  Settled in the 1600's, it is rich with tradition and history.  A long time ship building mecca, the river banks saw five-masted ships and schooners making their way down the river on their way to the sea.  Sea captains built fine mansions, many of which are preserved today as lovely inns with antique charm.

Artisans have flocked to the Maine Seacoast for centuries and some of the finest galleries in the Northeast are found in The Kennebunks. The work of painters, jewelers, potters, weavers, wood workers, boat builders and other crafters are on display and alive in Kennebunk’s studios and galleries.

The new Waterhouse Center on Main Street is an open-air family pavilion that offers old-fashioned ice skating in the winter, a wonderful farmer’s market in the summer and programming year-round. There is plenty of carefully planned parking in tucked-away lots, too. The Kennebunk School District is consistently among the top 10 percent of school districts in Maine, according to the state Department of Education.

Kennebunk also offers many interesting and educational walking tours. For the lover of architectural history, Kennebunk boasts a large number of beautifully preserved historic homes exemplifying New England’s early architecture, as well as ocean view homes along Gooch’s Beach, waterfront estates along the Kennebunk River, and charming New England cottages in the village. Visit the Wedding Cake House, where romantic legend has it that busy sea captain George W. Bourne embellished the house to atone for not having taken his bride, Jane, on a proper honeymoon. The Brick Store Museum sponsors guided architectural walking tours of the distinctive buildings in the heart of Kennebunk's National Register Historic District that gracefully demonstrate the many architectural styles and influences employed over the centuries in Kennebunk and Kennebunkport.

Bordered by some of the most beautiful and accessible beaches on the Atlantic,  sunbathers, surfers and those who scour the shore for seashells, will enjoy all that the beaches of Kennebunk and Kennebunkport have to offer.  Kennebunk Beach, Gooch’s Beach, and Mother’s Beach are a few of Maine’s best beaches.

With splendid oceanfront properties, picturesque harbors, quaint shops, charming inns, and fine dining, the Kennebunks attract those seeking the best of New England coastal living.
